Mine is quite rusty so I'm going to give it a good clean with a wire brush, polish it up a bit and then probably have it re-chromed.

Start by undoing the nut the holds the detachable end cap in place.
Remove the end cap, washer, spacer and the copper sealing ring.
I then help the exhaust vertically and gently tapped up and down it so all the soot fell loose.
The BSA Instructions manual suggests doing this every 3000 miles (5000km).

There is belted plastic on my exhaust that I can't get rid of. So I'm going to consider replacing it.
